June 2009 Post: The Economy and it's Affect on College Students/Parents

We are all aware of the economic uncertainty many families now face, specifically families with one or more college students.

What are you hearing from students and parents on your respective campuses?

How will this affect the message you deliver to parents, activities you plan?

Please share experiences or post questions of your own. This is a timely topic and we can certainly learn from one another.

I agree with a previous poster that you should post the link to your featured article to make it convenient for us to read comment.

We are receiving more phone calls from incoming students and their families letting us know they are unable to attend college this fall based on parental/familial job loss and other significant economic challenges. Local students are choosing to live at home rather than in the residence halls. Lastly, our neighboring institution that is our biggest competitor chose to "open their admissions standards" based on their low recruitment numbers to admit students who traditionally chose our institution because they were unable to meet the competitor's original admissions standards. Those students are choosing to go to the other institution. We are seeing significant melt and are a bit worried about our numbers in the fall.
